Psalm 8 — O Lord Our Lord

C.M. (8.6.8.6) Tune: RICHMOND Psalm 8 Scottish Psalter (1650)

Psalm Text

O Lord our Lord, how excellent

Is thy name all the earth o'er!

Who hast thy glory firmly set

Above the heavens far.

From mouths of babes and sucklings thou

Didst strength and praise ordain,

To still the enemy, and to cause

Th' avenger to refrain.

When I look up unto the heavens,

Which thine own fingers framed,

Unto the moon, and to the stars,

Which were by thee ordained;

What then is man, that thou of him

Art mindful in thy love?

Or what the son of man, that thou

Dost visit from above?

For thou a little lower hast

Him than the angels made;

With glory and with dignity

Thou crowned hast his head.

Of thy hands' works thou mad'st him lord,

All under's feet didst lay:

All sheep and oxen, yea, and beasts

That in the field do stray;

The fowl which in the air do fly,

The fish in sea that glide,

And whatsoever passeth through

The paths of seas so wide.

O Lord our Lord, how excellent

In all the earth's thy name!
