Trinitarian

Essential

Songs that accurately distinguish and honor the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as three distinct Persons of one God. Proper Trinitarian theology is the foundation of all Christian worship — we worship the Triune God revealed in Scripture.

What to Look For

Holy, Holy, Holy — Lord God Almighty
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost (Doxology)
Come, Thou Almighty King — distinct persons, one God
Be Thou My Vision — O Lord of my heart

Why Trinitarian Worship Matters

The doctrine of the Trinity is not an abstract theological puzzle — it is the heart of who God is. The Athanasian Creed declares: "We worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity; neither confounding the Persons, nor dividing the Substance."

What to Look For

A Trinitarian hymn will:

  • Name all three Persons — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit each acknowledged
  • Distinguish the Persons — The Father sends, the Son redeems, the Spirit indwells
  • Affirm unity — One God, not three gods; one will, one essence
  • Avoid modalism — Not treating Father/Son/Spirit as mere "modes" or "roles" of one Person

Examples from Our Library

  • Holy, Holy, Holy — "God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!" The classic Trinitarian hymn par excellence.
  • Come, Thou Almighty King — Each verse addresses a different Person of the Trinity.
  • Doxology (Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow) — "Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost."

Scripture Foundation

  • Matthew 28:19 — "baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost"
  • 2 Corinthians 13:14 — "The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all"
  • John 14-16 — Jesus teaches about the Father and the Spirit as distinct Persons
